Nike, an American manufacturer of athletic shoes, apparel and sports equipment, recently announced that it would stop using kangaroo leather this year. The latest offering from the brand’s Tiempo football shoe franchise will be made from a ‘proprietary synthetic upper’ which the company claims offers a superior performance solution and will replace kangaroo leather.

The decision comes after a bill was introduced earlier this year in the US state of Oregon – where Nike is headquartered – that would ban the sale of “any part of a dead kangaroo or any product containing parts of a dead kangaroo”. reported American media outlets.

Connecticut legislators are considering similar restrictions. California banned kangaroo leather products in the 1970s.

Animal rights activists in Australia and elsewhere have also campaigned against the commercial killing of kangaroos.

German sportswear firm Puma previously announced it would stop production of football boots made from kangaroo leather this year, replacing it with a better non-animal-based, synthetic material.
