Manchester United will hope to continue their march towards a top three finish when they host struggling Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils were humbled in their last Premier League outing, conceding six goals in the second half as they were beaten 7-0 by Liverpool last week, but began to make amends on Thursday night with an assertive 4-1 thumping of Real Betis in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie.

The Saints have picked up two wins from their last three league games but still sit 19th in the relegation zone, a point behind Leeds who sit just outside the bottom three.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the clash at Old Trafford.

Man Utd team news

United manager Erik ten Hag may elect to field the same team that dismantled Real Betis on Thursday night.

That would mean another start up front for Wout Weghorst, who scored his second goal for United in midweek. He’ll be supported in attack by Marcus Rashford, who has 14 league strikes so far this campaign, and Antony, whose starting place is a little more secure after a positive display.

Marcel Sabitzer has a knock and may not be fit in time. Anthony Martial is back in training but Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen are still unavailable.

Man Utd predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Fred; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst.

Southampton team news

Midfielder Carlos Alcaraz netted Southampton’s crucial goal in the 1-0 win over Leicester last time out but is a doubt with a knee problem. If he can’t start, Mohamed Elyounoussi could come into the starting XI.

Mohammed Salisu has a knock, so Jan Bednarek could continue to parTner Armel Bella-Kotchap in central defence. Juan Larios and Tino Livramento remain sidelined for the visitors.

Southampton predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Bazunu; Maitland-Niles, Bednarek, Bella-Kotchap, Walker-Peters; Ward-Prowse, Lavia; Walcott, Elyounoussi, Sulemana; Adams.

The season has been positive for United even if they were handed a wake-up call in the hefty defeat to Liverpool. They may have had their outsider title credentials quashed but victory over Betis got them on the right track again.

Ten Hag’s side are clear favourites against Southampton, who have managed to keep within touching distance of other struggling sides with a couple of recent wins.

The home side should have too much attacking quality for the visitors on Sunday.
